BAVARIA C42

The C42 is the first model developed by Bavaria Yachts following the change in ownership and management. The shipyard’s design brief was to retain the key design characteristics of the C-Line 57/50/45 models while, at the same time, sending a clear and precise signal of the new management’s change of direction and mindset.

Our task was to translate this concept, first into a project on paper and then into a fully realized yacht. Working closely with the shipyard and adopting an open-minded approach throughout the development process, we felt that retaining the deck style would help preserve the C-Line’s family feeling, while a completely new hull would communicate the desired message to the market. The new hull, however, was not intended to be a mere styling exercise, but rather to serve a clear functional purpose for the new model. As a result, for the first time in Bavaria’s history, we have a sailing yacht with a pronounced chine hull that is, at the same time, elegant.

The bow is wide and rounded above the waterline, then narrows below it into a V-shaped form. This distinctive configuration creates impressive interior volume while giving the yacht an aggressive, sleek appearance reminiscent of the latest ocean-racing yachts.

The new model continues the philosophy behind the C-Line, a range designed to combine comfort with the pleasure of sailing. For this reason, the C42 features a very generous sail plan, with a mast taller than those of all its competitors. This considerable sail power is balanced by a high level of stability, ensured by the innovative hull design, allowing the yacht to sail safely and confidently in all conditions.

As with the previous models, owners can choose between a self-tacking jib and/or a conventional jib on longitudinal tracks, as well as a bowsprit for the gennaker, integrated with the anchoring system.

The construction system follows the approach developed and refined for the other models in the range: sandwich construction in the hull sides and a single skin in the bottom, with bulkheads laminated at their extremities and the modular “Modutech” assembly system.

In developing the rig and sail plan, in collaboration with the Bavaria Yachts development team, we focused on two key aspects: ease of handling and above-average performance. The 54-square-metre mainsail and 47-square-metre genoa capture the wind’s power more effectively, giving the Bavaria C42 strong performance both reaching and upwind. The Code 0 (85 square metres) and gennaker (140 square metres) enable the yacht to reach high top speeds.

The self-tacking jib ensures excellent handling and ease of manoeuvring and is included as standard on the Bavaria C42. To optimize the rig across all points of sail, the backstay and its tensioner are also included as standard equipment.

In the design and construction of the interiors, Bavaria introduced a clean and streamlined style aimed at optimizing costs while maintaining a sense of elegance and comfort. The standard layout features three cabins and one bathroom, while alternative configurations include two cabins with an aft storage compartment, or two bathrooms — one forward for the owner and the other located amidships. The galley is L-shaped, as on the C45/50, and is particularly spacious. The living area is completed by a U-shaped sofa with a folding table to starboard, a straight settee to port, and a navigation station.

The deck layout is designed around simplicity, with wide side decks facilitating movement around the yacht. Available options include two additional winches for the 105% genoa and the possibility of relocating the two aft winches within easy reach of the helmsman, allowing the self-tacking jib to be controlled from one side and the mainsail from the other.
