Katariina II, launched in the summer of 2015, is a one-off racing boat developed for the ORC races. In comparison to our previous designs of the same class, this boat has more flared hull sections.
Deck of the Katariina II has been designed to be as more ergonomic as possible: in fact, it has a large cockpit with a forward big steering wheel and a low pro le coachroof to move easily on deck and to be more aerodynamic.
The interiors were carefully studied to be the minimum required by the regulation and they have been designed, in accordance with the owner, to be ergonomic and comfortable for the offshore races.
Structurally speaking the boat is design to have the right stiffness to withstand the natural loads. The hull has been laminated with an optimized lay-up made of infused unidirectional bers. Different types of core have been used on the different areas of hull and deck to assure the proper balance between weight and stiffness, for example in the forward area,where there are high slamming loads,a high density core has been used in combination with single skin laminate.
All the interiors are structural to combine furniture with the structure and save weight: the interiors located at the extremities are made with composite material and the ones in the central part of the boat with marine plywood to obtain a better weight distribution.
The central structure of the boat is made by a stainless steel frame which is designed to take the high loads deriving from the mast, shrouds and keel and transfer them smoothly to the hull. This frame is connected mechanically to the bulkheads and the surrounding structure and it is also over laminated and tabbed to the hull. The remaining structure of the boat are made by longitudinal and transversal stiffeners containing carbon unidirectional bers and laminated directly to the hull.
All the bulkheads are made with composite material and they are bonded and tabbed to both hull and deck.
The appendages have been designed for the best hydrodynamic efficiency and they have been optimized with the best CFD techniques. The keel is assembled with a cast iron n and a lead bulb and it is milled to have the proper designed shape.
The sailing plan has been developed in collaboration with the North Sails designers and optimized with the CFD techniques.
